The types of Creator Ambition

I found this interesting article by Cal Newport on how different writer ambition affect work styles between writer Michael Crichton and John Grisham.

TL:DR

It comes down to two types of creator ambitions.

Type 1 is taking on multiple projects and skills building on various initiatives

Type 2 is a narrow focus on a specific skill or topic and honing the craft

Deciding whether one should embrace Type 1 or lean towards Type 2 Creators.

Cal Newport's article sheds light on the importance of being aware of our own ambitions as creators. He used teo writers John Grisham and Michael Crichton.

It's not just about what we want to achieve but also understanding the impact it has on our work style and productivity.

For instance, Michael Crichton, the renowned author of "Jurassic Park" and "The Andromeda Strain," was known for his Type 1 ambition. He juggled multiple projects simultaneously, delving into various fields and skills, such as TV Screenwriting and Filmmaking besides creating his novels.

This approach allowed him to explore diverse ideas and challenge himself creatively. However, it also meant he had to manage the complexities of multiple projects and allocate his time and energy accordingly.

On the other hand, John Grisham, the bestselling author of legal thrillers, exemplifies Type 2 ambition. He honed his craft within a specific niche, focusing solely on legal fiction. This laser-like focus allowed Grisham to master his chosen genre and build a loyal fan base. By dedicating himself to one area, he could dive deep into the subject matter and become an expert, establishing his unique brand as a writer.

So, how can we determine which type of creator ambition suits us best? It starts with self-reflection and awareness. Here are a few steps to help us make an informed decision:

  1. Evaluate your interests and passions: Consider the subjects, topics, or skills that truly excite and motivate you. Are you drawn to a specific area or do you find joy in exploring various fields? Understanding your genuine interests will provide valuable insights into your creator ambition.
  2. Assess your strengths and weaknesses: Reflect on your strengths and areas where you excel. Are you a versatile individual with a wide range of skills, or do you possess exceptional expertise in a particular domain? Recognizing your strengths will guide you towards the type of ambition that aligns with your capabilities.
  3. Consider your long-term goals: Visualize your aspirations and the ultimate vision you have for your creations. Do you see yourself exploring diverse avenues and pushing boundaries? Or do you envision yourself becoming a master within a specific niche? Keeping your long-term goals in mind will help you determine the direction of your creator ambition.
  4. Be open to experimentation: It's essential to be open-minded and willing to experiment with different approaches. You might start with one type of ambition and later discover that your preferences have evolved. Give yourself the freedom to adapt and adjust your path as you learn more about yourself as a creator.

When to go all in on a Type?

I don't think anyone is a true Type 1 or Type 2. We can allow ourselves to have some flexibility and grace to try each type.

When I think about my own goals for CG BOSS I feel I am wanting to be like Crichton Type 1, but as an INFJ I have dreams and visions about the kind of worlds and multimedia I want to create, but I need to be a Type 2 to make it happen. Still I cannot shake the fact that being a Type 2 Creator is something most poeple might fall into where we hone the craft to a high level skill before branching out to other projects.
